About me :

Greetings! I am Scott Cohen, a science and STEM educator who is a doctoral candidate in science education for the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University. My research focuses on teachers’ professional knowledge and skill in teaching science with deaf students, where I explore ways to support the growth of pre-service and in-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge to improve science teaching with deaf students.

I have lectured at state, national, and international conferences for science teaching, focusing on topics concerning deaf students, including teachers’ knowledge and skills, scientific-ASL discourse complexities, the development of science identity, and informal science/STEM learning experience. Part of my experience during the doctoral program was establishing STEM HANDS, a 5-day residential summer STEM program serving deaf students who are 14-18 years old from all over the state of Georgia. This program created a wonderful opportunity for deaf students to learn STEM outside of school, which I hope to expand to other age groups of students as well as other states.
